Make Mexico the 51st state.

Problem solved.

Somehow I doubt people would go for that...

I'd like to see it, actually, and let's absorb Canada while we're at it.

Either Mexicans would have to switch from pesos to dollars, or the U.S. would have to switch over to pesos. That would get confusing. Canada wouldn't be as bad, but their money is still slightly different in value from ours, so we still have the currency problem. Also, while Mexico would start paying taxes when they were annexed, they have a lot more people on welfare, so this would be a serious drain on the economy, one that we could ill afford.

I hope that it's either Virginia or California.

There's a bill under consideration that would open the door for Hawaii to do just that.  They're trying to get "Self Rule" for native Hawaiians allowing them to create their own govt./laws, etc.

It's about time, we kind of screwed them over when we annexed them, because before the Americans created their own gov. in Hawaii the queen had declined annexation.

Either Mexicans would have to switch from pesos to dollars, or the U.S. would have to switch over to pesos. That would get confusing.

You must be unaware of what's going on with European currencies lately. Currency conversions aren't daunting. Also, since Mexico would be joining the Union, it would adopt the Union's currency. Why would the Union convert to pesos? Were you trying to be funny?

Not as serious as what Germany went through after unification, and what Korea will go through when it eventually reunifies. You bite the bullet. Mexico has a lot more to offer than people realize.

Mexico would probably not want to become the 51st state. It would rather remain independent and improve its economy through conventional means. Absorbing it into the Union would be a relatively quick and easy solution to their problems, but they would lose theirnational identity.

But I still think it's a viable solution, and in some respects inevitable. What I mean by that is that two disparate economies cannot coexist indeffinately. The conflict in this dialectic will eventually cause a crisis. What emerges from the crisis will have equilibrium, but it might not be the kind of equilibrium we want.

Wow, lots of talk about AZ. LOL.

I agree that the incentive to come to the US is too great for people to stop from trying to get in.  But I believe that we first need to put a stop on the people crossing illegaly and that requires to put more people and resources on the physical border.  I grew up in San Luis, AZ, a border town.  Trust me, it is not very hard to cross the border illegaly, when i was growing up, many undocumented people would walk by my house asking for water (which I gave them).  I also crossed the border illegaly(for fun and in a drunken stupor), which is a completely different story, but it was suprisingly easy to do it.  That is why I believe we need more people keeping watch.  I don't think this will completely fix the problem as you would have to now deal with all the people that are here.  But I dont' think deporting them back would be the solution.  I think that letting them work for their citizenship is the right thing to do.  Let them prove that they want to be Americans.  Have them learn our language, history.  This is a very complex issue as we all know, but we have to all accept that the people that did make it across, got hired, built a home, are here to stay even if some people dont like it.  Let me know what you think.

I think it's pretty amazing you can do something like cross a border while in a stupor. When I'm in a stupor, I pretty much can't do anything on account of being in said stupor. That's what I think.

Well I think that this should be a topic of it's own, and not in the New Geeks section.

I'll make one, then you can basically make the points again.

Oh, mainly that it would require us to invade a neighboring country, kill and maim thousands (millions?), and have the rest of the world decide it was time to give us the beat down we so richly deserve.

But, I could be wrong.

I was thinking in terms of a peaceful transition. Setting aside national pride and other useless notions, why shouldn't such an arrangement be made? Both parties would benefit.
