  • I am not geeky enough to appreciate Linux. I tried and failed. Sorry. I'll bash that sudo chown some other time. Maybe a Mac instead?

You just didn't try the right flavor of Linux, perhaps.  You don't have to be geeky to appreciate a stable, secure, easy-to-use environment on a computer. :)

I just started a Linux blog recently aimed at the more-technical-than-average-user who hasn't any Linux knowledge, but wants to give Linux a try.  It's here:  http://www.linux-critic.com

I'm starting out with some howto articles and some method-behind-the-madness posts meant to explain some of my own choices about things.  It's something I would have gotten a lot out of back when I was feeling "not geeky enough to appreciate Linux" but wanted to move on from Windows anyway.

I do try Linux from time to time... I've even ditched Windows for a few months and went Linux completely (Fedora back then I think). But as much as I hate Windows wasting my time/patience, I will NOT accept a Linux alternative where I must turn to the terminal and type in silly commands for anything but the most idiot-proof tasks. And I know we still have to. It's the 21st century and that's just sad. So a move to the Mac seems 100x more likely.

I can definitely understand that.  I'm a bit disappointed in that state of affairs myself.  But you might give Ubuntu a try.  I'm more of a Slackware guy myself (I don't mind typing arcane commands :)), but I recently installed Ubuntu on my laptop and I've been forcing myself to NOT open a terminal when I feel like I want to -- mostly just to test how user friendly the GUI is.  It's pretty good.  The only time I need to resort to a terminal is when I'm trying to do something the average user wouldn't have a clue about.

Ubuntu isn't perfect, but it's about as close as you can get to a user friendly distro (read: user friendly == for average users, not super tech gods).
