My dad wants to set up an FTP on one his computers, and he needs to serve about a gig of data. How would he do this?

you can use a number of things,,,simple people like me use the iis integrated with windows and set up and FTP or you can download a number of ftp server software on the net. dont forget to forward the ports to the right computer on your network

I'd reccomend Serve U as an FTP server. You can use the built in support for FTP that IIS has, however, Serve U has some features that the FTP server within the IIS bundle does not have. Some of which include better user and group permissions.

Just make sure to set the port within the FTP server you chose (21 in default, Optimum Online blocks port 21 as far as I know) and also be sure to open and forward ports on your firewall to allow access for others outside of your network.

I agree with Chris.  Serve U is a fantastic app.

If your dad doesn't want a textual hostname as opposed to using his IP and doesn't have/doesn't want to spring for a domain name, check out  dyndns.
