hello everyone
« on: February 12, 2006, 01:04:19 PM »

hi there. I'm not technically a geek per sey, but I have been dating one for about 4 and a half years, so hopefully that gives me some credability. I actually recently used this website for a sociolinguistics project at my university. We are researching the usage of modifiers by different tribes, or social groups. I chose the geek/nerd tribe and found lots of data on these forums.  So a thank you to everyone who posts is in order. My next project, which is only worth 5% of my mark, so please don't think that I am trying to have you do my homework for me  :P , is to describe how geeks/nerds describe themselves. If there is already a thread on this topic please point me towards it, otherwise  if you could tell me what makes a geek a geek in your own words I would really appreciate it. So far from living with my boyfriend my personal conceptions are that you must LOVE computers. This is non-negotiable ! Also, a lack of desire to leave the house followed by the ability to stay up really late playing online games with others who you have never actually met in the flesh seems to be important. But, these are just my personal observations. What I'm looking for in general is the age, sex, type of residence, occupation, educations and or other demographic characteristics. This is only a one page report, so really if even three people reply to this post you've beena  great help and I can pass on your own personal classification of what a 'geek' is. Thanks in advance to any and all who reply! Perhaps this will add something to my relationship in the way of understanding of my boyfriends' value system pop supply ='s important, cleaning does not.

There is a thread around here somewhere about this topic, but to sum it up we are all male, 14 years old, downloading pics of the latest Jennifer Love Hewitt nip-slip. We play D&D cast Mortinkyles Magical Watch dog and attack the dakness with Magic Missle. We all wear retainers and are 180 pounds, chubby type. Oh, I am the only one that wears contacts, everyone else wears BCG's (Birth Control Glasses). Oh, and your bf is not a geek, NO GIRLS ALLOWED!

Welcome welcome.
Enjoy your stay.

Edit:
Here is that thread. http://www.geekforum.org/viewtopic.php?t=3203 Enjoy.

Actaully any speech, or typed language is perfect for sociolinguistic data collenction. It studies the way people actually talk/type, so this site was perfect. Our study is not trying to prove anything, rather we will look at and analyze the data, and then come up with generalizations and patterns found withing the data, but the outcome depends on the data, so our predications could be completely incorrect, which is also fine in this field, as the only important thing is that the language is correctly recorded and the results are accurate, even being inconclusive provides us with some data.  So, thank you for the responses, the other thread I was directed to was also very helpful.

There is no "Y" in "per se".

Put a "Y" in "per se" one more time, and you'll be sleeping with the fishes.

Capisce?

If you're looking for demographic information, i think the only common thread among all of us is a desire to learn, and an ability to make other people feel really stupid if they would take 5 minutes to just think about what's being said/done around them.

I have no desire to learn, and I don't understand the second part, so I guess that leaves me out.

People can be geeky in different ways.  I suppose a good question would be
"How do you get your geek on?"

Someone with more tenure on this site should create a "How do you get your
geek on?" poll.  I'm a noob and still feel that I must live down my spurt of
neophyte necromancy before creating polls and the like.

"Get your geek on"?

Define geek for me, first, since there is a 10 item limit on polls.

geek

Main Entry: geek
Pronunciation: 'gEk
Function: noun
Etymology: probably from English dialect geek, geck fool, from Low German geck, from Middle Low German
1 : a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake
2 : a person often of an intellectual bent who is disapproved of

I personally identify with 2, but to each his/her own.

I don't think anyone disapproves of me. At least not anyone that counts.

So I must be 1.
