Question for the Hardware Guys
« on: November 09, 2006, 11:42:03 PM »

So, for those of you who don't know, I'm a database developer.  This means that I can write (some kinds of) code like nobody's business, but I am basically ignorant about hardware.  I have a 1.5TB database that sits on a massive SAN.  Simple question...on a SAN this big, can I run a Scandisk (or something else) to view my disk fragmentation without having to bring my system down?  Thanks in advance.

That depends what kind of database it is. Oracle for instance  has built in commands to see database fragmentation and those work much quicker than an OS command like scandisk.

What kind of SAN is it?  Seems like I've run across something about how some of them handle disk fragmentation as a part of the RAID, but I am pretty new to SAN-wrangling so I might be thinking of something else.

All I know, is that my boss threated to kill me if I even though about running Scandisk or Defrag on our EMC box. I'm assuming you're using some type of EMC storage solution?

Check what the SAN's vendor recommends. Always run some defragmentation tool on a SAN, keeping in mind Window$ defrag may not do a thing!
