Finger Tendons?
« on: November 19, 2002, 08:57:23 PM »

I have something that alot of people have, and i dont know how to fix it.

See, if i hold out all of my fingers, and try to close my pinky (just my pinky), the ring finger moves down with it, and a little bit of the middle finger. Now, if i try to put my ring finger or any other finger down, it works.

Plus, if i clench my fist, and try to OPEN my pinky, it works.  But it doesn't work with my ring finger!

This happens on both hands, and I want to know the explanation for why this is happening.  Can I do excercises to stop it? Can i do anything to stop it? I think it would make me play guitar alot better and write better and many things... cause i know people who can and cant do this.

Same with me.  I have crooked pinkies on top of it, so they kinda curve in more than the rest of my fingers.

Heh, this is one of those innate things, it'd seem. I have no clue if you can change it, but hell, who knows....

I heard that if you try to exercise it, you can paralyze your hand.  The ring finger and pinky are connected; they're supposed to move together.  I'm pretty sure.

I've been able to move each finger on each hand independent of its neighbors for as long as I can remember. I've played guitar since I was 5, so maybe there's a connection.

I remember reading some urban legend of various guitar players having the webbing between digits surgically removed so as to inhance their fretting prowess

Oddly enough when I try to curl the little finger on either hand, the ring curls too, but when I curl my left ring finger the little finger stays independent while the little finger curls too on the right one; plus the middle finger pulls with my right ring finger fa chrissakes. I have screwed up hands in many ways....

i read somewhere that this ring finger phenomenon has something to do with palmistry.  Like if you're ring finger can move freely it means you're going to have 3 kids next week, or something like that...

seriously though...it means somehting....you should check it out...

P0ptarts is right about the guitar thing. I've got some major problem trying to reach strings from odd positions because me hands are the same way. Stretching them is the best thing. Also if you keep practicing at it. First hold down your one finger with your thumb and put the others back up. It works because your thumb is keeing the one finger from going back up so you can control your other fingers without worrying about the other.
